Update and Prayer Request: Tuesday @ 3:00pm

Derrick got out of the ICU last night and has been with all the “regular” patients since!  He has been moving around a bit and getting stronger and stronger.  Kathy spoke with the doctor and physical therapist today and they are impressed at his recovery already!

The hope is that he goes home tomorrow (even though the doctors said 1-2 more days in the hospital).  Please pray that Derrick gets to go home sooner than later to continue to recover in the comfort of his own home.

And, thank you all for your prayers and support of Derrick, Kathy, Noah and Ethan.  They are beyond thankful for the outpouring of love during this time.

Update and Prayer Requests: Sunday @ 7:45

Today was another great day.

Just heard from Kathy and she is at the hospital watching baseball with Derrick!  Pretty awesome.

Here’s the latest information from Kathy:

The doctors don’t talk much beyond the next 24 hours.  So, we still don’t know how long Derrick will be in the hospital but they said he might be out of the ICU as soon as tomorrow.  Derrick is still pretty weak and they said there will be some work to get him fully recovered.  Thanks for all the love and support so far and please keep praying for our family as we begin the recovery process.

GREAT NEWS: Saturday @ 12:30 p.m.

Derrick has been off the ventilator for about an hour. He is doing good. He is still very groggy but awake.

UPDATE: Saturday @ 10:30 a.m.

From Kathy:

Off sedation meds for the last hour. Tube is still in but he’s breathing on his own for about 30 min. Still breathing a little to fast. Dr wants to give him more time before they take it out but still hopeful it will happen today.

Infection dr was also just here. Confirming legionella and probably got it from the plumbing in their house. Once tube is out it will still take some time. He’ll be tried and short of breath for several days. Dr said he will have full recovery…no long term effects.

Answers and awesome news: Friday @ 2:00

Couple of AWESOME updates:

1.  Derrick is doing great.  Looks like he’ll be taken off the ventilator tomorrow.  He has been awake today, though, which is great and is IMMENSELY encouraging to Kathy.

2.  The doctor just came in and they finally found out what has been ailing Derrick.  It is called legionella pneumonia.  Still not sure where he could have gotten it – it is usually caught from standing in contaminated water.  But, all treatment he has had up to now is the right treatment.

Awesome News! Friday @ 1:00 p.m.

Derrick has been off all the meds and doing all the work of breathing for the last 45 minutes!  He is still intubated but this is great news!!  He also had his eyes open long enough earlier to see a video of the boys that Kathy made earlier this morning when she was home.

Go Derrick!!!

Friday @ 10:30

the latest from kathy:

They are running the tests differently today and they are taking longer then they have in the past days.  As of right now it doesn’t look like he will be off the ventilator today.  But, they will check again later on in the morning.  All blood tests came back better.  Platelets are up and white blood cells are down so everything is moving in the right direction.

Evening Update: Thursday @8:30 p.m.

It was a very encouraging day all around.  Derrick was showing signs of improvement and Kathy spent the afternoon and evening with Noah and Ethan!

The latest from Kathy:

Just called the hospital to check in for the night.  Everything is still the same with Derrick.  It was nice to come home a little bit earlier today to be able to spend some time with the boys.  They are still doing great.  Pray that tomorrow they are able to take the ventilation tube out.

Thursday @ 10:30

From Kathy:

After turning of the sedation meds Derrick started to to not get enough oxygen.  So they will be keeping him in the ventilator at least one more day. But he is doing much better. All the doctors have said he is on the mend. Also the hantavirus has come back negative!  Praise God!  While he was awake I was able to talk to him just a little. I told him how much love and prayers have been showered down on us.

UPDATE: Thursday @ 9:45

They just turned off Derrick’s sedation meds and reduced his dependence on the ventilator.  This is one step closer to removing the ventilator!
